14 Simple Winter Skin Care Tips

December 17, 2018

Winter has its own charm. But have you ever realized the havoc it could wreak on your skin? The cold air robs the natural oils from your skin, leaving it dry and itchy. It can even cause severe dry skin, eczema, and psoriasis. That’s why you need to take care of it.  Here I have listed 14 Simple Winter Skin Care Tips which you can follow.

Cold weather and low humidity levels result in dry air, which then steals moisture away from the skin every second of every day. Without immediate care, dry skin can lead to cracking and bleeding, and harsh winter wind makes the problem worse.

Additional moisture helps, but you need to do more to actually counteract these effects and keep skin looking youthful and smooth. To reduce chapping, redness, itching, and keep skin more healthy and comfortable this season, try 14 Easy Winter Skin Care Tips.

14 Easy Winter Skin Care Tips

1  Use Lukewarm Water

It is very tempting to go for hot showers when the temperature is dipping. But if you love your skin, avoid them. Instead, use lukewarm water to shower and wash your face. Hot showers dry your skin quickly, and if you do not moisturize it immediately, your skin can become more dry. Once you have taken a lukewarm shower, apply a moisturizer. This will keep the moisture barrier intact and prevent dryness.

2. Eat Right and Stay Hydrated

Eating foods high in water content can help hydrate your skin from the inside out. Try watermelon, cantaloupe, apples, oranges, kiwi, and watery veggies like celery, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and carrots. This is one of the most important 14 Simple Winter Skin Care Tips that we all should follow.

Make sure you’re getting enough vitamin C and zinc to support the healthy production of collagen and elastin. Also consider Be Well’s omega-3 supplement, or consume more fatty fish and flaxseed to give your skin the building blocks it needs to appear supple and smooth.

Be it inside your home or outside, the air is drier in winter. And as a result, water evaporates from your body easily. Hence, you need to keep your skin hydrated. An easy way to keep it hydrated is by drinking lots of water. Though you might not feel as thirsty during winters as the other seasons, you need to maintain your regular water intake.

3 Invest in a Humidifier to Maximise Moisture

Using a humidifier in your home or office will add moisture to dry winter air and help keep your skin hydrated. Run a humidifier in the rooms you spend the most time in, including your bedroom. This is one of the most important 14 Simple Winter Skin Care Tips that we all should follow.

4 Choose Skin Care Products Wisely

What kept your skin care products happy during summers can make it sad during winters. And that’s why you need to change your skin care products accordingly. The key to healthy and glowing winter skin is using mild skin care products.

5 Change Your Cleanser

Some cleansers can be extremely drying to the skin. If you’re used to using options that contain glycolic or salicylic acid, rotate with a more hydrating version that contains moisturizing ingredients. After cleansing, don’t leave the skin naked for more than 30 seconds, as this can dehydrate it, leading to increased dryness. Apply a hydrating toner and moisturizer to seal in moisture.

6 Gently Exfoliate

As the body ages, its natural ability to regenerate new layers of skin slows down. Gentle exfoliation will slough off old skin cells and reveal fresh, glowing skin.

Exfoliating the skin helps in getting rid of dead cells. But you have to be careful during winters because your skin barrier is already compromised due to the dry and cold weather. And you don’t want to lose it with excess exfoliation.

Exfoliating your skin once a week is fine – this helps in boosting skin regeneration and better product absorption.

7 Choose Moisturizer Carefully

Use a rich, oil-based moisturizer during the winter months. This will help seal water in your skin and will keep it more moisturized than water-based face lotions. As always, choose organic and know your ingredients!

Be sure to choose a smart formula that has natural, nourishing ingredients. Go for an oil-based rather than a water-based solution, as it’s more likely to help your skin retain moisture in the winter. This is one of the most important 14 Simple Winter Skin Care Tips that we all should follow.

8 Protect

Get used to wearing gloves and scarves to protect skin from cold winds, rain, and snow. Also, don’t forget the sunscreen. Winter sun can be just as damaging as summer sun, so apply a safe option like zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to any exposed areas.

9 Alcohol-Based Products

Avoid Alcohol-Based Products while the weather is cold. Alcohol-based cleansers and toners tend to be too harsh, and drying, for use during the winter skin.

10 Stick To Your Night time Routine

Even though it gets dark, it’s still important to stick with your night time skin care routine. And this means not falling asleep with all your makeup on. Make sure that you remove makeup before sleeping.

11 Change Out of Wet Clothes Quickly to Avoid Itchy Skin

Wearing wet clothes and shoes can further irritate your skin and cause itchiness. If gloves, socks, and pants become wet, be sure to remove them as soon as possible. This is allso one of the most important 14 Simple Winter Skin Care Tips that we all should follow.

12 Wear Appropriate, Comfortable, Non-irritating Clothing

Many cold-weather fabrics can aggravate dry winter skin. Keep wool and rough clothing from directly touching your skin. This can cause dry skin to get irritated and itchy.

Instead, wear light layers made from soft, breathable materials directly against your skin, and then pull on your heavier, warmer sweaters. Be sure to protect your hands from cold winter air with gloves or mittens, remembering to choose a pair that won’t irritate your skin. If you prefer wool gloves, put on cotton or silk glove liners first.

13 Exercise

I know it’s hard to leave the warmth and coziness of the blanket behind and get moving on a chilly winter morning. But do it if you love your skin. Exercise will pump up your heart rate, which in turn, pumps more blood to your organs and skin. It also keeps your pores clear. Exercising makes you sweat, flushing out all the toxins, cleaning the skin, and keeping your internal organs healthy.

During winters, the oil and sweat glands in your body and the blood vessels constrict a bit. This makes it hard for your skin to keep itself healthy and glowing naturally, and that’s why it needs your help.

I live in a colder environment and with heating on most of the time, it draws out moisture from the skin. Investing in a humidifier is a good idea. I do have humidifier but never thought of turning it on while heating is on. Staying hydrated and opting for hydrating skincare products will help a lot too.
